Padre Biosca and Padre Tomas talked to Padre Condal, Spiritual Director of "Las Hijas de Maria," at Our Lady of Monserrate to participate and help get girls for the 1st Girls Jornada. 27 Girls, mainly "Hijas de Maria" and daughters of "Cursillistas." formed the 1st girls Jornada.  The 1st Auxiliares were "Cursillistas."

                                  Note: The first few Jornadas were "experimental," and were all girls Jornadas.

                                  There was also fear of putting so many young guys in one house all together.

October 1971 - Auxiliar classes are formed to create first guys team or "Equipo" to work in guys first Jornada. In 1972, a group of guys prepare to be the 1st Auxiliares for Jornada # 1, October 26, 1972.

With the help of "Las Hijas de Maria" the guys prepared for their 1st Jornada.

In this Jornada, Jornadista Mickey Torres (may he rest in peace) created a youthful name for Jesus, Chuito !!!

October 1972 slogans for individual Jornadas began:

          Jornada # 8 de Muchachas: "Something Else! "

November 30 - December 3, 1972 - The early Christian communities used a fish symbol to secretly identify each other to prevent being prosecuted.

January 1973 - Discussions started to form an "Equipo Base."  This group of elected Jornadistas, along with the Spiritual Director would aid in the direction and activities of the movement. On Febraury 19, 1973 the first elections took place, Charlie Silva was elected the 1st President of the Movement. The positions were:

February 1973 - 1st Prayer Book "Pasos Hacia el Encuentro" was published.

January 28, 1973 - the 1st "Plegaria." The purpose of a monthly "plegaria" in a different parish was for Jornadistas to get together in prayer.  This was a "collective prayer" from the movement for the success of the next Jornada.

January 25, 1973 - In a meeting with the participating Jornada parishes "Delegados" were formed to representatives their church.  The "delegado" would be the liaison between the Cursillo House and the parishes.  In this way, the parishes would be up-to-date on the Jornada movement activities.  

Two delgados per parish, one Jornadista and one adult.

June 1973 - Dia de Concentracion - Haverstraw was a picnic style day where Jornadistas and friends would enjoy a day of: prayer, sports, food, music and cultural activities such as plays.  The day would end with a procession, with each parish carrying a banner of the years theme.

September 1973 - Jornada Movement is Officially Recognized by the Dioceses of Brooklyn / Queens as an authentic youth movement

November 1973 the Jornada Slogan was created:

      Jornadistas !          Presentes !

      Por Cristo !             Siempre !

      En la Iglesia !         Valientes !

1973 - The Cross / Reunion de Celula Card / T-Shirts / Buttons / Jornada Pancartas  showing Jornada #, and date.  Also, candidates would sign pancartas for coordinador or coordinadora to take as a token of their Jornada.

July 1974 - Jornadistas attended the 1st Hispanic Congress in Brooklyn and take a role in identifying youth needs in the Dioceses.  These are the major points:

                       ~ More Programs for Hispanic / Latino Youth

                       ~ To have a Youth Congress 

October 1975 - Symposium in Madison Square Garden - Jornadista Sandra Capellan spoke on behave of the youth. 

Summer of 1976 - 19 Buses with Jornadistas and Pre- Jornadistas traveled to Philadelphia to participate in the 41st Eucaristic Congress. Jornadistas took a major role in preparing the Youth Mass.

November 11 - 15, 1976 - The Jornada reached a milestone with Jornada 25 de Muchachas. Clausura was at "Our Lady of Peace." Coordinated by Carmen Castro. All auxiliares in this Jornada were prior Coordinators.  Joining us in the Clausura were: Obispo Mugavero, Obispo Valero and Obispo Synder.

On November 28, 1976, we celebrate at the "Astorian Manor" with the music of "Bobby Rodriguez (may he rest in peace) y Su Compañia.

May 1977 - The actual first "Jornada de Jornadista" was celebrated May 6th - 8th of 1977 (from Thursday to Saturday.) It was created for older Jornadistas who needed a "boost." This one was only for girls. The "Coordinadoras" were: Yvonne Peña, Maria "Cuca" Rivera, Lisa Klein, Sonia Rosado, Sandy Capellan and Elizabeth Hernandez." 37 Girls participated.

But, unknown to me,  it didn't continue.  The idea resurfaced again in 1985.  

January 1978 - The Jornada know reached another milestone with the guys Jornada # 25.  Coordinator was Richie Renta made he rest in peace.  Clausura was in O.L.P.H.

We celebrated back at the "Astorian Manor."  with a local salsa band, "Vibracion Latina," in which many of the musicians were Jornadistas !

June 1978 - a meeting took place to create the "Youth Task Force" for the Northeast Region to represent the youth.  Thirty (30) Jornadistas attended.  This Youth Task Force would keep records of all youth activities throughout the Northeast Region and implement new events.  

June 1978 - Padre Juan Amengual is reassigned to work with youth in Spain.  September 1978, Padre Tomas and Father Keeney take responsibility of the movement.

February 1979 - Padre Victor Dallo was named new Spiritual Director of the Jornada Movement.

April 1980 - A "brainchild" of Rudy Vargas, the "Caminata" would take the movement to new heights.  Now exposing the powerful youth movement to the community at large.  The procession started on "Good Friday," later moved to "Sabado de Gloria," Saturday morning.  The 1st "Caminata" took us to "Los Dolores" Church in Manhattan.

February 1980 - The Jornada Movement celebrated Jornada # 75 (combined.) 40 Girls Jornadas and 35 Guys Jornadas.  The Clausura was in O.L.P.H. and Coordinator was Juan Rodriguez.  The celebration for the 75th Jornada was at St. Malaquis Church with "Luis Perico Ortiz" and his band.

May 1982 - girls Jornada # 54 marked 100 Jornadas combined for the movement.  The Clausura was at "St. Teresa of Avila" Church in Queens and Karol Avila Coordinated.  To celebrate the 100th we took the party to "Mickey Allen's Show Boat," where "Conjunto Placer" entertained us that night.

June 1983 - The youth of Camden, New Jersey wanted the Jornada.  Talks began for possible Jornadas retreats in Camden, NJ, Father Mike Massaro headed the discussion from New Jersey.  November 1983, Camden, New Jersey celebrated their first girls Jornada, followed by the guys Jornada # 1 in the same month.  Auxiliares from New York Jornadas made up the equipos.  

April 1984 - Jornada Movement records their first music album called, "Haciendo Camino Al Andar."  

Feb. 1985 - The Jornada Movements takes a stand on: hunger, homelessness and famine.  The Jornadistas and Pre-Jornadistas organized a campaign to raise funds to contribute to the following cause:

The Famine in Ethiopia / Homelesness / Support Vocations for young men &  women who are interested in studying Nunhood or Priesthood / and funds for Casa de Cursillos for Jornadas.

The campaign raised $ 8,000.00 dollars.

​

The 1985 "Caminata" was dedicated to this cause and a thanks giving Mass was celebrated at "St. Patrick's Cathedral" for all the hard work.

January 1986 - The idea of "Jornadas de Jornadistas" back in 1977 resurfaced in 1985. The first "JJ" for short is lauched in January of 1986.  Both girls and guys joined together for the weekend to pray and relive that Jornada feeling once again.  But this time the "JJs" continued. Powerful !!!

March 1987 - Guys Jornada # 72 (March 19-22) marks Jornada 150 combined.  78 Jornadas for girls and 72 Jornadas for the guys.  The Clausura was held at "St. John the Baptist," and the Coordinator was Javier Rosario.  

Once again the movemnet joins in celebrating 150 Jornadas with a dance at "Flue de Lis."   

April 1991 - The girls, their first Jornada was back in 1967 are celebrating their 100th.  Wow! The Coordinator was Nelly Rivera and the Clausura was at St. Peter, Paul, Our Lady of Pilar...

March 1992 - Guys Jornada # 96 marked the 200 combined Jornadas.  104 Girls Jornadas and 96 Guys Jornadas.

"In the early history of the movement, many pioneer leaders would forsee the movement one day celebrating 100 Jornadas.  In 1992 the movement doubled it with 200."  

1992 was also the 25th Anniversary of the Movement !!
